After being involved in Oswestry Rugby Club for more than 38 years I feel very honoured in following a long list of previous Club Chairmen that have shaped our Rugby Club into a major force within Shropshire and the North West. I have a hard act to follow the retiring Chairman, Steve Charmley, who has done a fantastic job these last five years in developing the Club both on and off the field.
Last summer we completed a full refurbishment of the Bar area: we are now open plan, no Vice Presidents’ room to the horror of some senior members and no fireplaces.
The RFU has provided some of the funding as part of the Get Ready for the World Cup 2015 project, together with kind donations and generous discounts on labour and materials, which we have matched with most of the members doing the hard graft, just like when we first moved from the Wynnstay to Park Hall back in 1978 under the guidance and leadership of our dearly- missed Gran Morgan and Pip Jenkins. What we have now is a more welcoming space to sit and have a chat, watch the game and have a beer. We also have a Club/Function Room which can project the Club both socially, and more importantly, financially.
The ever reliable Mike Owen is still playing and coaching the U17s who have entered the Raging Bull U17 leagues. Their games take place at 12.30pm on Sundays, so please come along and support, again please check this website for details.
This takes me to the Juniors and Minis section that just keeps growing every year, with teams at every age group from under 6s to under 16s and is testament to our organisation throughout the club over the years, containing former Club Captains, players and numerous volunteers as Junior Coaches.
This brings me to our New Website for you to explore and enjoy. Over the summer a working party has been developed to reorganise our communications between all departments within our great club. We now have a public Facebook page, a twitter Account and now this brand new Mobile-Friendly and we hope, informative Website. All you need to do is click on the "SITE MENU PAGE MENU " (top-left) and then click on the page you require (on or off-page).
Finally none of this would have been possible without the support of many individuals, companies and Sponsors by volunteering and providing material and financial support. My main aim this year is to thank everyone for their continuing support to the best club in the area Oswestry Rugby Club.
Welcome to the new 2016 -2017 season at Oswestry Rugby Club, this will be the Club 40th season so a big well-done to everyone that has contributed to our great Club since the first meeting in the Wynnstay Hotel back in the 70s.
Having secured promotion at the end of last season the 1st team have a very exciting fixture list against sides that 40 years ago Oswestry could only dream of playing against, but it is going to be hard to pick up points this season, but the Clubs aim is to avoid relegation.
As we start the season with a completely different side some supporters may say who’s he, or where’s is he from, these new players have come through our very successful Junior sides and been recruited by our Coach and President, although it will be very difficult to replace Zak and Hamish our beloved Kiwis who have now returned home, they have left us a legacy of how to perform week in and week out and give 100% to the Club both on and off the field.
Having mentioned earlier our junior section is growing from strength to strength and with the added Girls section the Club now provides Rugby for nearly 300 local youngsters. Also the Club have the support of many of the parents who have taken up volunteering roles within the junior section.
A major thanks must go to our Sponsors, Former Players and Vice Presidents whose continued financial support helps the Club reinvest in our facilities and coach education programmes
As I enter my final year as Chairman I would like to thank everyone for their continued support and encouragement and invite you all down to Granville Park to see good grassroots’ Rugby in our 40th year.
